Is that green guy in your Small Group?  Should he be?  Read on!!

What's a Small Group?
Small Groups are groups of people who gather for regular fellowship, prayer, Bible study and encouragement.  They are not a substitute for weekly Sunday worship services -- instead they are an additional opportunity to worship and interact with others in a more personal setting.

Why should I join one?

  • to study the Bible
  • to pray with and for others
  • to develop and deepen your relationships with God and others

There are several small groups meeting within The Church in Galloway.  Some of them have specific purposes, but most are a Bible study of a particular book using the chapter summary method.

Chapter summary method, what's that?
Chapter summary
is an easy and effective Bible study method.  What you do is read the chapter to be studied several times throughout the week, preferably in various translations of the Bible such as NIV, King James, etc.  Then with the help of commentaries or other resources you outline the chapter by answering a series of questions.  The questions are provided below.

These Small Groups are meeting NOW!  Join in.

  • Tuesday Small Group - Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm, meeting at the church building.  (Studying Hebrews.) See Tom.
  • Tuesday Praise Team (Music) - Tuesday evenings at 7:30 pm, meeting at the church building.
  • Wednesday Small Group - Every other Wed. at 7 pm, meeting at the Green's (current study - Abiding in Christ).  See Brent.
  • Thursday Small Group - Every other Thursday at 7 pm, meeting at the Pennington's home.  See Shari.
  • NEW Small Group - Every Saturday at 9 am at Georgesville McDonalds - beginning Jan. 26, 2008.  (Exper God) See Brent.

Chapter Summary method overview:

  1. Caption - If you were going to give the chapter a title, what would it be?  You don't have to be fancy, but it's fun to be creative.

  2. Contents - How would you break the chapter down?  For example, Esther chapter 1 might be broken down as v. 1-9 King's & Queen's Banquets; 10-12 King's command and Queen's refusal; 13-22 Consultation & results.

  3. Chief People - Who are the main people in the chapter?

  4. Choice Verse - What verse spoke to you most, or sums up or sets the tone for the entire chapter?  It usually is easier to determine this first, then build from it (especially the caption).

  5. Crucial Words - What words were mentioned most often, or are most meaningful to the chapter?

  6. Challenges - What didn't you understand or what other questions were raised?  These are items you'll dig deeper for.

  7. Cross References - What other books, verses, situations, etc. are pertinent to the chapter?

  8. Christ Seen - How was Christ seen in this chapter?  What titles, descriptions, attributes and actions of his do you see?

  9. Central Lessons and Conclusion - What did you personally get from this chapter, and how will you apply it to your life?

The goal is that you have summarized the chapter so that your notes provide a quick and easy, but thorough, reference to that particular book.

Whenever you read or study the Bible, keep in mind that the primary way God communicates with us is through His Word.  In it you find the answers to your prayers and to the daily difficulties and trials you face.  Don't just approach the reading or study as a means to fill out your summary; it is God talking personally to you.  Look for what he is telling or showing you.  As a helpful guide, turn to your S.P.A.C.E.P.E.T.S.
